Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Initiatives

The mission of the Audio Publishers Association Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee is to promote awareness of audiobook industry career opportunities available to underserved and underrepresented populations through networking events and virtual initiatives.

For these applications we align ourselves with the We Need Diverse Books' definition of Diversity: We recognize all diverse experiences, including (but not limited to) LGBTQIA, Native, people of color, gender diversity, people with disabilities*, and ethnic, cultural, and religious minorities.

*We subscribe to a broad definition of disability, which includes but is not limited to physical, sensory, cognitive, intellectual, or developmental disabilities, chronic conditions, and mental illnesses (this may also include addiction). Furthermore, we subscribe to a social model of disability, which presents disability as created by barriers in the social environment, due to lack of equal access, stereotyping, and other forms of marginalization.

New narrator workshop

Launched in January 2020, these workshops focus on BIPOC, LGBTQIA, and other marginalized actors who have never narrated an audiobook, or only have a few audiobook credits. The workshops are a mix of round-table discussion and performance guidance. Actors do not need to be APA members to participate in this event.
